This series of works was painted during a period when my mother narrowly survived a brain hemorrhage; it created a state of relief, mixed with fear and all sorts of emotional ramifications. There was no stability or control anywhere. The work is hopeful and shows a great deal of evolution: it seems to grow beyond the canvas, a new life that builds on what has already been written. Ultimately, my mother passes away, which feels—after a period of unwavering strength—like defeat. Seeing your mother like this is the most intimate, yet unwanted, dialogue I have ever dreamed of, and these countless identities reverberate through me.
